About Us

1st Quakers Hill/Doonside Scout Group is a part of Greater Western Sydney Scouts.

Scouts is one of the largest and most successful youth organisations in the state.

Today’s Scouts can take part in an extraordinary variety of outdoor activities, from ‘traditional Scouting skills’ such as camping and bush craft, through to more extreme challenges such as abseiling, overnight hiking, rafting, canoeing, canyoning, snow activities, rock climbing, sailing and even flying! Scouts also have the opportunity to become involved in performing arts, leadership development, community service, amateur radio operation, environmental projects, large-scale Australian events such as Cuborees, Jamborees and Ventures, international events, and service projects in developing countries.

At Scouts Australia NSW, we put the needs of young people first. Our youth led, adult supported approach ensures our youth members are always at the forefront of our program and gives them the platform to take a constructive place in society as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities

Joey Scouts

Meets Tuesdays 6pm - 7pm

5 to 8 year olds

Joey Scouts is the first Section of Scouts, for boys and girls aged 5 - 8. It focuses on fun and friendship, and is a gentle introduction to a world of challenges and adventures through Scouting.

A young person can join the Joey Section at any time after their 5th birthday provided they are attending school full time.

Joey Scouts are encouraged to express themselves creatively, through games, stories and craft activities. From building monsters and spaceships from scrap items, to growing plants from seedlings and singing songs together, all Joeys develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around them.

Joey Scouts learn how to socialise with other children and help other people. They also learn how to recognise native birds and animals, and develop an understanding of the impact of our modern world on the environment.

A trained Joey Scout Leader guides a Joey Mob of up to 20 boys and girls as they learn to share and care for each other in a social environment. The safety of all Joey Scouts is very important, which is why there are always leaders on hand during all activities.

8 to 11 year olds

Cub Scouts is the second Section of Scouts, for boys and girls aged 8 - 11. It focuses on exploring the outdoors and living an active lifestyle in a safe and friendly environment.

Cub Scouts have a lot of fun doing a lot of interesting things! They are introduced to traditional Scouting skills such as tying knots and using a map and compass, and take part in outdoor adventures such as camping, rock climbing, abseiling,  bushwalking, sailing, gliding and flying, canoeing, and billy-karting!

Cub Scout also learn valuable life skills such as leadership and taking responsibility for themselves. They are taught the value of citizenship and how to give back to their communities.

Each Cub Scout collects special badges to demonstrate their skills and acheievements, and has the opportunity to achieve their Grey Wolf Award before moving onto the Scout section.

Camp Fire at Night

Scouts

Meets Friday 7.30 - 9.30

11-14 year olds

Scouts is the third section of Scouting, for boys and girls aged 11-14 years. It gives young people the opportunity to take part in a range of activities that teach important life skills - while having fun and keeping active!

Scouts focuses on allowing young people to develop their confidence and teaches them how to work as part of a team. Scouts learn essential outdoor safety skills as well as participate in a variety of physical and intellectual challenges. The programs are designed to target each young person's own special interests, encouraging them to enjoy their favourite hobbies using meaningful badges and awards.

Epic bushwalks and camping expeditions, getting out on the water in a kayak, canoe or sailboat or even going up in a plane on a visit to the Air Activity Centre are just some of the adventures Scouts get up to!

Promise Challenge Badge for Zac and Ethan

The Promise Challenge is an individual badge designed for the 7 year old Joey Scout. It is the major Challenge for the Joey Scout Section and has individual elements as well as activities to do with the Mob.

Achieving the Promise Challenge Badge helps older Joey Scouts to obtain a better understanding of  the Scout Promise and Law, the history of Scouting, and Lord Baden Powell, the founder of Scouting. When each component of the Promise Challenge has been completed, it is submitted for approval by the State Commissioner for Joey Scouts.

Outstanding Service Award

Doc is a valued member of the QHD Scouting team. He brings with him years of experience and leadership skills. He spends most of his time in the Scout section but is always more than willing to visit the Cubs and Joeys to share his skills. This year Doc was awarded a much deserved Outstanding Achievement Award from Scouts Australia recognising the 50+ years of dedication to Scouting.
